Current projects

Monitoring zebra mussel veligers

Zebra mussels reproduce by releasing microscopic larvae into the water column. This active monitoring makes it possible to predict population growth.

Monitoring zebra mussel density

We carry out annual density monitoring to better understand the impact of our actions on the proliferation of zebra mussels and their rate of colonization of the lake.

Completed project reports and briefs

Assessment of STOP zebra mussel operations, 2023 (FR)

Controlling the zebra mussel population in Lake Massawippi remains the focus of Bleu Massawippi's operations for 2023. With studies and results encouraging our continued efforts, this review sets the table for our spring and summer 2024 efforts.

Brief on boating safety presented to Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau, 2016 (FR)

In collaboration with a number of regional organizations working to protect lakes and their watersheds, Bleu Massawippi participated in the drafting of a brief on boating safety presented to the Minister of National Revenue, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau.

Recruitment monitoring with artificial substrates

Assessment of STOP Zebra Mussels operations, 2022 (FR) Espace

The detection of the zebra mussel in Lake Memphremagog in 2017 led to the implementation of a tight detection protocol in Lake Massawippi and the reinforcement of preventive measures on a regional scale. These actions have postponed its arrival in Lake Massawippi by more than 4 years.

Characterization of the riparian zone of Lake Massawippi, 2023 (FR)

In the summer of 2021, approximately one-third of the riparian strip of Lake Massawippi was observed at 42 250-metre stations. More than half of the lake's riparian strip is inhabited, while just over 40% is still natural to this day.

Our citizen science project, involving the installation of substrate collectors, enables us to observe the areas around the lake where the mussel is present from a much wider angle.

Monitoring native freshwater mussel density

To observe the biotic impacts of zebra mussels, we began monitoring the density and infestation rate of the Lake Massawippi freshwater mussel population.

LACcessible project report submitted to Transport Canada, 2023 (FR)

In collaboration with Transport Canada (PCSN) and the Parc régional Massawippi, this project enabled Bleu Massawippi to carry out an immense task of raising awareness and documenting the issues associated with boating on Lake Massawippi. Safety and civic-mindedness issues have been identified and have guided the activities of our patrollers and outreach teams in the field.

Final report Intelligent Boating phase 2, 2022 (FR)

In 2019, Bleu Massawippi launches the 2nd phase of the Intelligent Boating project. Funded by the CNSSP for 2 years, this project benefits from a 3rd year due to the pandemic. The main aim of this project was to document the impact of navigation on the safety of bodies of water.
